It is with great sadness that we have to announce that the creator of The Labyrinth of East London Lore, Dr T., has passed away. Helping people through his website gave him no end of pleasure. If you had contact with him and would like to leave a message, please send us an e-mail here.

DEATH NOTICE: see the Cape Archives, MOOC 6/9/1557, No 4123.

John Lumsden was born in Aberdeen (Scotland) in October 1845.

For many years he worked for the firm of JJ Irvine and Company of King William's Town but later moved to East London as a general merchant, and established the firm of John Lumsden & Company, landing, shipping, forwarding and commission agents, with his office on Commercial Square.

In May 1879 he was elected to the Town Council as a representative for Ward 2 but resigned immediately because it was found that he did not have the necessary property qualifications.

He did not stand again until July 1880 when he was elected in place of Frederick Jarvis. He failed to gain re-election to the Council in February 1881.

Lumsden died on 3 August 1919 at the age of 73, and was buried at East London.
