James Humphrey Hawkins was born in New Brompton (Chatham) on 2 February 1845.
It is not known when he came to South Africa or, indeed, when he settled at East London. It is known,
however, that he became a carpenter, joiner and undertaker.
He entered the Town Council as a representative for Ward 1 in February 1880, but served only a few
months before resigning in December because military duties took him to Basutoland. He later moved to
Kimberley where he worked for De Beers Mines.
Hawkins died in Johannesburg on 3 December 1921, at the age of 76. He was buried at East London.
