It is with great sadness that we have to announce that the creator of The Labyrinth of East London Lore, Dr T., has passed away. Helping people through his website gave him no end of pleasure. If you had contact with him and would like to leave a message, please send us an e-mail here.

The SA Oranjeland was a South African freighter with a mass of 15,790 tons. She was built in Hamburg in 1969.

She was wrecked off East London's Esplanade opposite today's Regent Hotel on 13 August 1974 after leaving harbour during a gale.

Ironically, she had just put ashore the crew of the Produce which had been wrecked on the Aliwal Shoal in 1974.

For several months major attempts were made to drag the Oranjeland off the rocks. Early in 1975, however, she broke her back and had to be abandoned.

The ship was eventually cut to pieces, leaving only the hull that was one metre below the water at spring low tide.
